BMI is a screening tool only and does not directly measure body fat or health status.
Key Limitations:
- Muscle mass: May overestimate fat in athletes and underestimate in elderly
- Ethnic differences: Asian populations may have higher health risks at lower BMI
- Body fat distribution: Does not account for visceral fat (waist measurement helps)
- Age/gender: Older adults may have different healthy ranges
When to Consult a Doctor:
- BMI ≥ 30 (Obese) or BMI ≥ 25 with weight-related conditions
- Waist circumference ≥ 40in (102cm) for men or ≥35in (88cm) for women
- Unexplained weight changes
- Existing health conditions (diabetes, hypertension, etc.)
Note: Not for use with children, pregnant women, or competitive athletes.
Comprehensive Health Assessment Should Include:
- Body composition analysis (DEXA, BIA)
- Blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar tests
- Medical history review
- Physical activity assessment
